Wild Chords Tells A Story To Teach Guitar Tabs!

Learning a new musical instrument is never easy.  But, following the demise of Guitar Hero, there is – as one might suspect – an app for that!  Now, those who want to learn to play the guitar need only a guitar, an iPad, and Wild Chords to get started on a road to musical proficiency!

Wild Chords is an application, currently exclusively available for the Apple iPad, that helps teach you how to play the guitar.  In order to use Wild Chords, all you need is a guitar and an iPad; you do not need speakers or an amplifier if you are using an electric guitar.  In fact, if you are using an electric guitar, you have to unplug it from other equipment – like an amp – because the distortion from other equipment affects the program.  Even if you have never picked up a guitar before, Ovelin – the app’s publisher – is confident that Wild Chords can teach you.

One of the keys to learning to play a musical instrument is to keep the student engaged and that is where Wild Chords succeeds.  The app uses an animated interface that involves a story.  The app begins with the story of animals breaking out of a local zoo.  The guitar student is informed that by playing guitar, they can lure the animals back to their proper places.  Thus, students are given the easily-reinforced goal – on-screen validation when the animals move where they are supposed to – for the assimilation of the real lesson, in this case learning chords and fingerings on the guitar.

Wild Chords operates very simply.  Because the Apple iPad features a microphone, the app is able to “listen” to your guitar playing.  Calibrated to the iPad sound system, Wild Chords evaluates the notes you play against the notes the application is telling you to play.  With a fast processor speed, the iPad allows Wild Chords to evaluate both the notes you play and the speed at which you play the music.  Wild Chords reacts to your playing; animals flee on screen or follow you where you want to lead them.  With its bright, animated graphics, Wild Chords is easy to see and use, making it ideal for both young people and adults alike.

The Wild Chords app is available in the iTunes online story for free.  As you become more proficient with playing your guitar, you are likely to want to advance beyond the free beginners levels.  More advanced levels are available for $.99 each.  To learn to play the guitar with such a fun interface, Wild Chords is a steal at that price!
