Working For Every Legal Advantage, Jamie Gorelick Guides Amazon!

Following the rise of consumer and privacy activists to defeat the Stop Online Piracy Act earlier this year, the reaction to the defeat both online and in the tech sector has been interesting to watch.  Many of the leaders who organized the fight against SOPA have formed organizations, like the Internet Defense League, to create watchdog positions and communications networks to prevent future SOPA-like legislation from passing.  Many businesses decided to beef up their legal department so they could better understand the potential consequences of such legislation to their specific business.  Amazon.com hired Jamie Gorelick to its Board of Directors.

Jamie Gorelick joined Amazon’s Board of Directors as a legal advisor.  Her expertise is expected to benefit the company both in terms of future legislation that might affect how Amazon interacts with its many media partners and with Amazon’s attempts to gain a brick and mortar store presence in the United States.  Navigating a transition from an Internet-only business to one that is both Internet-based and has physical locations for customers to visit is fraught with legal pitfalls and Jamie Gorelick may just be the legal professional to guide Amazon.com through that particular challenge.

A graduate of Harvard College and later Harvard Law School, Jamie Gorelick earned her Bachelor’s Degree in 1972, graduating magna cum laude.  She continued at Harvard for her J.D., which she earned- with honors – in 1975.  She was hired immediately out of law school by the prestigious firm of Miller, Cassidy, Larroca and Lewin.  Her service with that firm lasted almost twenty years, though she took a position briefly to serve as an assistant to the Secretary Of Energy during the Carter Administration.  Jamie Gorelick gained an incredible amount of litigation experience while at Miller, Cassidy, Larroca and Lewin and her success rate led her to become President of the District of Colombia Bar for a year in the early 1990s.

Jamie Gorelick spent a year, early in the Clinton Administration, providing legal guidance to the Department of Defense during the consolidation planning.  Following her service for the Defense Department, Gorelick was promoted to Deputy Attorney General of the United States.  She served the Justice Department in that capacity until she went to help manage Fannie Mae as Vice Chairman.  After she returned to private practice, she was called upon to serve again; during the Bush Administration, she was one of the lawyers who was part of the 9/11 Commission.

Now at Amazon, Jamie Gorelick will bring her vast wealth of corporate and government law to help guide the company through its next planned expansion!
