Someone To Marvel At! Rosanna Yau Is A Creative Genius!

For those who might not have heard of it yet, there is a social network challenging Facebook for supremacy on the Internet.  It’s not Google+, either!  The social network is called Diaspora and it is an open-source alternative to Facebook that was founded on the belief that users ought to control their information and social network experience.  Diaspora is a good idea that has been plagued by problems, not the least of which are a lack of name recognition (outside the hacker community) and the suicide last November of one of the company’s four co-founders, Ilya Zhitomirskiy.  Despite the setbacks, Diaspora is poised to break out into popular culture.  If it does, it will no doubt be in part because of Rosanna Yau.

Rosanna Yau is the new Design Wizard for Diaspora.  While Yau has been with Diaspora for years in a casual capacity – though she did design the website’s logo! – her leap to Design Wizard is her first official, ongoing, paid position with Diaspora.  And what a leap for Rosanna Yau!  Charged with making Diaspora more user friendly, better looking and fun, Yau comes to the job with enthusiasm and a ton of raw talent.

Unlike many people in the tech sector, Rosanna Yau is an artist.  While she is adept at computer programming, her real knack is for taking creative and clever ideas and executing them in original ways.  Living and working in San Francisco, Yau has made a name for herself both online and in the art community through her creative exhibitions.  After getting her Bachelors of Science in Visual Communication, Rosanna Yau attended the California College of the Arts.  There, she earned her Masters of Fine Arts in Interaction Design and her thesis was a strangely compelling argument for entomophagy as a solution to worldwide food shortages.  Who would guess that a person whose Masters work was on eating insects would be a huge asset at an Internet social network?!

Diaspora knew what they were getting with Rosanna Yau, though.  The creativity that Yau exhibits is one of the most desirable traits that Diaspora needs to set itself apart from the other Internet social networks.  Rosanna Yau’s creativity is exceptional, as evidenced by her Conversation Hearts project.  Rosanna Yau conceived, designed and created a whole interactive program based around food templates!  Using vividly contrasting frosting paints and stencils, Yau made conversation heart cookies that had abstract images on stenciled onto their glaze.  When these unique cookies are held up to a webcam on a computer with her program, the image on the surface of the cookie would act essentially as a barcode.  The webcam reads the surface of the cookie and opens a program with a photograph, video, audio message or written piece that she programmed.  This brilliant idea had the message on the conversation heart on the computer, making getting the message interactive and fun!

With creativity and programming talent like she exhibited on her Conversation Hearts project, Rosanna Yau is a great fit at Diaspora!
