Sheryl Sandberg, The Woman Who Made Facebook Profitable!

If you have seen The Social Network, you know the Hollywood version of the history of the creation of Facebook.  In the movie, Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook for the programming challenge and the status of creating the “next big thing.”  When Sean Parker comes into the mix, the priority with “The Facebook” is keeping the site cool and hip, as opposed to monetizing it.  This is actually one of the details from the film that jives with reality.  However, there came a time for Facebook to monetize and when it did, it was Sheryl Sandberg who made the cool Facebook into a multibillion dollar advertising platform.

Sheryl Sandberg is the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook.  Sandberg arrived at Facebook in 2008 after being wooed away from a potential job at Google.  That hiring was seen as a real coup for the Facebook team and shortly after joining the company, Sandberg initiated the advertising program that changed Facebook from a potential cash cow into a multibillion dollar moneymaker.  By 2010, Facebook was showing a profit, which was virtually unheard of in Internet social networks.

Sandberg arrived at Facebook with some exceptionally impressive credentials.  After getting her Master’s in Business Administration from Harvard Business School, Sheryl Sandberg worked for McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm.  She was not there long before the Secretary of the Treasury, Larry Summers, chose her to be his Chief of Staff.  Sandberg served the Clinton Administration in that post and was integral to the effort to forgive foreign debts that characterized Clinton’s second term foreign economic policy!

At Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg is responsible for virtually every aspect of the business end of the social network.  As Chief Operating Officer, Sandberg manages the public policy, communications, business development, human resources, sales and marketing divisions of the company.  While The Social Network may have brought Mark Zuckerberg popularity in the mass culture of the United States, Sandberg is the functional leader of Facebook for day to day operations.  While Zuckerberg holds the reigns tighter on technical development of Facebook, Sandberg continues to develop the business model to keep Facebook profitable.  In fact, a large portion of Sandberg’s job is integrating the technical ideas Zuckerberg and his teams develop with the long-term business models that Sandberg created for the company.

Sheryl Sandberg has the flexibility to adapt her business models to ever-changing technology to keep Facebook profitable and the tenacity to hold her own with one of the greatest minds of a generation.  Given how social networks rise and fall, one has to wonder just what company will scoop up Sandberg after Facebook falls.  Whatever endeavor does take on her talents, it will have an exceptionally powerful business tool in Sheryl Sandberg!
