Reinvigorating Nokia In The Public Eye, Jerri DeVard Is Very Cool!

Nokia has slowly been stopping its free-fall.  At one point, Nokia absolutely dominated the mobile phone market and the success of the company actually boosted the national economy of Finland significantly.  In recent years, though, Nokia had not adequately predicted the meteoric rise of the smartphone and the need to diversify their product line.  Under Stephen Elop, Nokia is diversifying and making other strategic decisions designed to keep Nokia alive in the very competitive mobile computing marketplace.  But all of Elop’s efforts would be for naught if it were not for the skills and abilities of Jerri DeVard.

Jerri DeVard is the Chief Marketing Officer for Nokia.  As the Executive Vice President, Marketing, Jerri DeVard is responsible for getting the word out about the innovations, developments and brand new products Nokia is releasing.  During the difficult turnaround time for Nokia, Jerri DeVard was an articulate, constant presence at tech sector events.  She effectively kept Nokia positively in the news during management changes and product retooling.

That Jerri DeVard has had such a positive effect on stabilizing Nokia and helping the company bounce back from its backslide in the market is not a real surprise.  DeVard comes to Nokia with a wealth of experience and an enthusiasm uncommon in Chief Marketing Officers.  Jerri DeVard was educated in marketing at Spelman College (where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree) and Clark Atlanta University Graduate School of Business where she earned her M.B.A.  After earning her Master’s she went to work for Pillsbury.

After a decade in management of various accounts at Pillsbury, Jerri DeVard changed her focus to marketing in other sectors.  As a Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Harrah’s Entertainment at the rise of video slot machine distribution, DeVard became acquainted with marketing very technical devices that required a lot of consumer education.  She focused on people when she joined Revlon as their Vice President of Marketing for their Color Cosmetics Division, where she stayed for two years.  By joining Citigroup in 1998, Jerri DeVard was able to accumulate a lot of experience in financing large corporations and when she left in 2002, she was able to be a real asset to Verizon.  Before joining Nokia, Jerri DeVard served as the Principal of the DeVard Marketing Group.

As Nokia works to reestablish itself in the market it once dominated solidly, Jerri DeVard continues to find new ways to excel as the Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer.  She has found ways to positively spin the Nokia adoption of Windows 7 for smartphones as well as several other controversial decisions of Nokia’s management.  But with her will and her skill, Jerri DeVard will help Nokia remain powerful in the mobile phone and mobile computing market for years to come!
