No Contracts, No Overage, No Limits, Just Ting

There are plenty of choices out there for mobile service providers – AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc. A new company hopes to join the ranks of these mega-corporations and provide customers with convenient, inexpensive mobile phone service.

Ting, a subsidiary of Tucows Inc, is attempting to completely change the way customers buy their minutes, messages, and megabytes. A Ting customer has the option to customize their plan based on what they think they will use per month for each item. Users can choose from zero to 3,000 minutes or megabytes and up to 6,000 text messages. The other revolutionary aspect to Ting’s service is that if a user does not use all of their allotted minutes, Ting will credit their account accordingly. Therefore, if you choose 6,000 text messages but only use 3,000, they would only bill you for the 3,000.

Ting uses the same principal for overages as well. If you go over the tier you selected, Ting will automatically upgrade you to the next higher tier and bill you the difference. There are no overage fees to pay and Ting treats the plan you selected as only an estimate of your usage, not the absolute rule.

Ting’s website dashboard is easy-to-use and shows exactly how many minutes, messages, and megabytes each phone on the plan has used. The dashboard shows the data on bar graphs so that all the information is in one place and easy to read quickly. Ting even estimates how much your plan will use for the month based on current and past usage.

As Ting does not require contracts from its customers, the company does not subsidize its devices. Unfortunately, you have to buy a Ting-approved phone in order to use the service. On the other hand, there are a range of phones to choose from, priced from $65 for a feature phone up to $545 for the Motorola Photon smartphone. The phones are nearly all name brands, so getting mobile computer support for them would not be a problem. Ting has an agreement with Sprint to lease its network for the service, so if Sprint does not cover your area, Ting does not as well.

If you are in the market for a new mobile phone service provider, Ting may be right for you. It is a small, new company and there may be some risks involved if the company’s intriguing new business model does not work well. No matter what the future holds for the little company, right now, Ting is a breath of fresh air blowing in among the big name mobile service providers.
