As Intellectual Property Issues Explode, Nicole Seligman Is Looking Out For Sony!

The fight over Internet security and intellectual property reached some new highs in December with the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act garnering quite a bit of press and controversy.  The debate is a classic Freedom of Speech position taken by those who want the Internet to remain independent of laws and restrictions versus protecting the business interests of large companies.  One of the big multinational companies supporting SOPA in the U.S. is Sony.  Sony’s chief lawyer is Nicole Seligman.

Nicole Seligman’s official titles are Executive Vice President and General Counsel of both the Sony Corporation and the Sony Corporation of America.  She is also the Corporate Executive Officer for the Sony Corporation and something of a celebrity in the field of corporate law.  Seligman has been vigorously fighting to protect Sony copyrights and patents for films, music, video games and video game platforms since Sony Corporation of America CEO Howard Stringer personally hired her in 2001.

Stringer had good reasons for wanting Seligman.  Nicole Seligman studied law at Harvard College and Harvard Law School, where she graduated with her J.D. Magna Cum Laude!  As a former editor of the prestigious Harvard Law Review, Seligman could have had a position at virtually any law firm in the United States she chose.  Fresh out of law school, Seligman clerked for Judge Harry T. Edwards before going to work for Justice Thurgood Marshall on the Supreme Court!  Seligman gained national attention when she was part of Oliver North’s defense counsel during the Iran-Contra hearings.  Always interested in the good fight, no matter how profile, Seligman was also part of Bill Clinton’s legal team during the Monica Lewinsky scandal and subsequent impeachment trial in the U.S. Senate.

In 2005, when Howard Stringer became CEO of Sony, he promoted Nicole Seligman to General Counsel.  That move made Seligman one of the most prominent lawyers fighting for the intellectual property rights of a multibillion dollar, multinational corporation.  As General Counsel and Executive Vice President, Nicole Seligman has run the extensive legal staff at Sony to ensure the company is in compliance with all financial disclosure and intellectual property laws.  Seligman has also vigilantly protected Sony’s business interests by leading the industry charge against video pirating.  Under Nicole Seligman, video pirates using the Internet have been more vigorously prosecuted.

While the issue of intellectual property rights on the Internet is not likely to be resolved fast, Sony has a powerful fighter on their side with Nicole Seligman.
