Buying a Computer: Why Computer Support and Computer Repair Records Matter

Before purchasing a new computer, most consumers do research on the specs of various products, looking to find the one that best suits their needs.  What’s often overlooked is the computer support and computer repair records of the companies behind the machines.  “Consumers need to know that those records may be more important than the computer’s specs,” says RESCUECOM CEO David Milman.

Several top computer manufacturers have recently faced bad publicity.  Dell has been engaged in a very public court case that has seen them accused of misleading and ripping off customers.  Sony was forced to recall over 500,000 laptops because of an overheating problem.  Even Apple has faced a storm of criticism and complaints after a security breach for the iPad and reception problems for the iPhone 4.

Some consumers might wonder if there’s anyone safe to buy from.

Milman says that “the simple fact is every brand of computer will, at one point or another, require some level of computer support or even computer repair.”

Consumers need to know what computer support options each manufacturer provides – whether it be online manuals, a computer support forum, or speaking to a specialist.  “It’s even more important for consumers to understand the computer support record of a company,” says Milman.  Knowing, for example, that Dell has a recent track record of providing unreliable computer support and poor quality computer repair might well be a deciding factor in a purchase.

Consumers must also consider the quality and reliability of a company’s computer repair services.  Computer repair problems can strike any brand, even the once seemingly invincible Apple.  In the most recent RESCUECOM Computer Reliability Report, Apple dropped to number three, despite improving their reliability score.  Yet, they have still faced recent complaints.

It’s important for consumers to know the likelihood of computer repair issues and the quality of the computer repair service they will receive.  For example, understanding the difference between Apple’s staunch refusal to acknowledge a problem, such as the iPhone reception issue, and Sony’s quick and forthright recall and repair of their VAIO laptops could be the tie breaker between two otherwise comparable potential purchases.

Many consumers are also overly concerned with the computer repair warranty they receive with their purchase.  “A good warranty is important,” Milman says.  “But if the level of computer repair services provided isn’t up to snuff, all the warranty terms in the world won’t matter.”

Certainly, the specs of a computer should be the first thing any consumer considers.  But in age when so many machines are so similar, the level of computer support and computer repair service provided by a manufacturer should always be a top consideration in any purchase.
