Running The Offices At Aviary, Paul Murphy Is A Cool COO!

With the proliferation of digital photograph editing programs, a number of new companies have sprouted up.  In order to make these emerging businesses successful, most of the new companies are staffing from established, successful technology companies.  The opportunity to trade the steady, reliable position that a large company offers for the excitement of a small start-up is surprisingly appealing to a number of people in the tech sector.  One person who enthusiastically transitioned from a major firm to a small IT company was Paul Murphy.

Paul Murphy is the Chief Operating Officer of Aviary, a photo editing suite designed primarily for mobile computing devices.  Murphy left behind a successful and lucrative career at Microsoft in 2011 in order to join Aviary.  While this might have seemed like an exceptionally risky move on Paul Murphy’s part, with the shutdown of Picnik, Paul Murphy’s gambit is paying off now!  Aviary is rapidly increasing its market share as it helps to fill the vacuum left by Picnik’s departure.

Formally educated at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Paul Murphy availed himself of many early opportunities that were presented to him.  He spent almost two years as an intern at the pharmaceutical giant Merck.  When Murphy earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Engineering, he went off to Spain as part of the Spanish Immersion Program.  There, he studied at the Instituto de Empresa Business School.  In Spain, Paul Murphy earned his Master’s of Business Administration in Business.

Paul Murphy immediately established himself as one of the up and comers of the tech sector when he established Netkick in 1998.  As co-founder and CEO, Murphy displayed a strong ability to manage and attract venture capital.  Netkick merged with Telajet and Murphy continued his successful ascent as the Director of Product Development for Telajet.  In that role, Murphy gained more direct, real-world experience with research and development and human resource management.  Those skills brought him to the attention of Microsoft.

Microsoft hired Paul Murphy in 2003 as a manager of the business development team for the company’s West & Central U.S. business team.  That opened many doors for Paul Murphy, who would head the Innovation team in India and take on increasing business-related responsibilities for Microsoft.  Murphy’s final role at Microsoft was to serve as Chief of Staff, first to Stephen Elop, then Kurt DelDene, the President of the Microsoft Office Division.

Rather than continue a slow ascent up Microsoft’s corporate ladder, Paul Murphy eagerly joined Aviary in 2011.  With his wide range of experience, Paul Murphy may just be the right Chief Operating Officer for Aviary in its time of growth!
