Not Quite What It Sounds Like: Apple TV Is A Cool Streaming Service!

In case you have not yet encountered it, Apple Computers currently has a product available called the Apple TV. Despite what you might think from the product’s name, it is not a physical television.  Instead, Apple TV is a media-streaming device that connects to a television. Apple released the first incarnation of Apple TV in 2007.  The current iteration of Apple TV was released by Apple Computers in 2010 and is more popular and much smaller. Since then, the design and basic capabilities of the Apple TV device have stayed the same, with only incremental updates over the last two years.

Recently, however, online and in-store retailers have begun to run out of the product. Many either list the product as out of stock or have removed the listing altogether from their websites. This seeming dearth of stock started rumors that Apple is about to release a newer version Apple TV. This pattern of unavailability has preceded updates and new versions of products from Apple, so the rumors may have legitimacy.

Apple primarily based the 2010 version of the Apple TV streaming content device around the iTunes store. Later, Apple added Netflix and support for a few other third-party apps, but not Hulu Plus or HBO Go. The content available on the Apple TV is sufficient for casual users, but some higher-density streaming content users may find it lacking.

The Apple TV interface is the most intuitive and user-friendly television streaming device currently on the market. For dedicated Apple enthusiasts, the Apple TV is a great device that helps to connect all of your disparate devices to your television and stream your content on a much bigger screen.

Speculations are running high as to what the new Apple TV will feature, but there are a few steady guesses. The primary, most certain, feature will be Bluetooth 4.0 and therefore the ability to connect all Apple devices to the Apple TV much easier than before. A feature that many people want on the new Apple TV is 1080p resolution output. That means true high definition output, which is a step above the prior model’s 720p output resolution. The final most-sought-after new feature would be a cross-platform search. The Xbox 360 allows users to search for a video, and then shows all available options from different content providers and their prices. Users hope that the new Apple TV will come with the same ability so that they may compare prices before they commit to a content provider for their video.

Two years is a long time for technology to remain static. Apple would be right to update the Apple TV streaming device, even if the company does not add any of the aforementioned features to the device. Apple TV is a cool concept and, properly updated to reflect today’s HD technology, the next iteration could continue that tradition of excellence.
