Leaving The Law For Latin America: Carly Bellis Co-Founded Impaktu!

Talent finds a way of finding its niche; people who are extraordinary seldom remain in positions that could be filled by virtually anyone with similar training.  As a result, it is largely unsurprising when a talented person leaves a good-paying, even prestigious, position to strike out on their own with a vision that is unique.  That is exactly what Carly Bellis did when she co-founded Impaktu.

Carly Bellis founded Impaktu with Javier Salom in 2011 and together they have been taking the advertising world by storm.  If you have not heard of Carly Bellis yet, it might be because Impaktu operates in Latin America.  In fact, when Bellis realized that there was a huge untapped market for Internet advertising in Latin America that was looking for a more local (on the same continent, at least!) company to develop the marketplace, she moved from the United States to Bogota, Colombia right away.  For the past nine months, Bellis and her team have been building Impaktu into a viable advertising network that is meeting the needs of publishers and advertisers for a myriad of Latin American companies.

That Carly Bellis would run off to form her own tech sector company might not have been a surprise given her skills and determination, but her training had her headed in a very different direction.  Carly Bellis attended Duke University, where she earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Sociology, Economics, and Markets & Management.  The broad business degree made her eligible for a slew of management positions throughout the business world, but Bellis went in a different direction.  She went to the prestigious University of Pennsylvania Law School where, in 2004, Carly Bellis earned her J.D. with honors!  As a member of Law Review of the University Of Pennsylvania Law School, Carly Bellis was immediately offered positions by many of the top law firms in the nation.

Carly Bellis chose Davis, Polk & Wardell for her first job that used her law degree.  As a litigation associate, Bellis spent two years distinguishing herself from the other lawyers at the firm with her unique insights and interpretations on the law.  That brought her to the attention of United States District Court Judge Joseph F. Bianco, who brought her on staff as one of his law clerks.  She remained with his staff until August of 2007, when Quinn Emanuel offered her an Associate position.  A year later, Carly Bellis gave up her prestigious and profitable law career and entered the tech sector!

Starting at Pica9 as a Senior Account Manager, Carly Bellis refocused her life and career on advertising, the Internet, and emerging markets.  In August 2009, Bellis left Pica9 for Ooyala.  While the move was initially a lateral one, Carly Bellis was soon promoted to Ooyala’s Manager of Business Development.  In carrying out her duties for Ooyala, Carly Bellis became aware of the market need for video advertising on the Internet in Latin America.  Inspired and with a plan, Bellis left Ooyala to found Impaktu.

As Impaktu grows and establishes a presence throughout Latin America, it is Carly Bellis’s diverse experiences that will guide the company to success.
