Kim Funk Is Counseling Roku At The Intersection Of Media And Technology.

As Cloud-based streaming services become more prevalent and popular, the major producers of movies, music, and television programming have become more anxious about the new services.  After early Internet sites like Napster gave away their content, major studios got wise (and litigious) and have been more vigorously fighting piracy.  The new strategy that both streaming services and the major studios have begun taking is creating alliances and agreements as Internet companies develop their platform.  That requires the streaming start-ups, or established sites that are looking to diversify into media distribution, to have great lawyers.  For Roku, the manufacturer of streaming media players, the legal team is headed by Kim Funk.

Kim Funk serves as General Counsel to the Roku Board of Directors.  Funk is also one of the company’s Vice Presidents and Corporate Secretary, all of which are posts she has held since 2011.  As one who has had a wide range of experience with legal matters both negotiation and litigation, Kim Funk is a great asset to Roku.  Under her guidance, Roku has been able to finalize important deals that allow the media player company to enjoy relationships with both streaming services and the studios.  The ability to effectively negotiate and to keep Roku from being embroiled in legal battles may be a statement on how well Kim Funk does her job.

A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Kim Funk has long exhibited an interest in business practices and the law.  She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration before deciding that she was most interested in pursuing a law career.  For her J.D., Kim Funk went to the University of Houston Law Center and she graduated cum laude from there.  Hired immediately out of law school, Kim Funk practiced in Houston, Texas and spent ten years gaining intensive, real-world, litigation experience there.

Following her decade of success with practicing law in Houston, Kim Funk turned her attention to corporate law.  She was hired by American Airlines where her focus was on employment law and litigation from employees.  For the seven years immediately prior to Roku wooing her to their executive staff, Kim Funk gained extensive experience with tech sector business law when she left American Airlines for ILOG S.A.  For the automation and supply chain company, Kim Funk served as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary.

Kim Funk is a valuable asset to Roku and with her talent for the law, Roku and the major media companies should have fruitful deals for many years to come.
