Internet Security for Santa

Using your network service to do your holiday shopping has many advantages.  There are no lines or crowds.  If you want to see another store’s price for a product, that information is a click away.  Even better, you don’t have to worry about parking at the mall – shopping has become as easy as turning on your computer and starting the network service. Shoppers who used their network service to buy gifts accounted for more than thirty billion dollars in sales last year.  Taking some quick and easy precautions will ensure that you can participate in this exciting new marketplace without compromising your Internet security.

1)   Protect your account information.  If you’re shopping for holiday gifts with your network service, it’s almost inevitable that you’ll have passwords, login names, account numbers, and other information important to your Internet security entered in to a variety of web sites.  It’s crucial to keep this data personally accessible while maintaining your Internet security.  Be very careful when allowing your network service to remember passwords, especially if the site has your credit card information.  After entering account information, always be sure to shut your network service down completely.  This Internet security measure helps to prevent subsequent users from gaining access to your data.

2)   Be suspicious of bulk email.  We’d all like to live in a world where anonymous strangers send us deals for our favorite products.  It’s much more likely, though, that the poorly spelled email in your inbox promising eighty percent off designer boots is a threat to your Internet security.  If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

3)   Know your seller.  Knowing the seller can be easy with a major online retailer like Amazon or Apple, but a bit more difficult with smaller network services.  Before dealing with an unfamiliar seller, check out the Better Business Bureau or look for reviews of the network service online.  A bit of research before you buy can save major hassles down the road.

4)   Pay with a credit card, if possible.  There are many different ways for online merchants to collect their money.  Credit cards provide the best Internet security for the consumer, since almost all credit card companies have anti-fraud and consumer protection features in place.  Established online payment methods provide the second-best Internet security.  Before using a network service like PayPal for the first time, look for reviews online to see how past users have reacted to it.  Be cautious of any online seller who asks for checks or money orders, as these payment methods have the fewest safeguards to protect your Internet security.

Each year, more and more people use their network service to do their holiday shopping, and each year, online con artists take more of their money.  Keeping just a few of these simple precautions in mind as you shop can help keep your holidays happy and secure.
