Buy From Your Local Artist (Or Someone Else’s Local Artist!) On Etsy!

Sometimes, the coolest places on the Internet are not the flashiest or the best known places.  When it comes to online shopping, most people look to eBay or Amazon or they log into specialized shops where they have specific products they are anticipating buying.  But the big online retailers are not the ideal place to buy art.  Art – fine art and homemade – has never had much traction on eBay.  There are some wonderful, specialized, websites and social networks for artwork online, like Art.net and Elftown.  But the place to buy and sell artwork on the Internet is Etsy.

Etsy.com is a marketplace for artwork on the Internet.  Arguably the best alternative to DeviantArt – which many artists find virtually impossible to sell work on because many, many starving artists use the network for feedback and to try to sell their wares . . . to other artists – Etsy is uncluttered by the attempt to be a social network.  Like eBay, Etsy is a sales site, pure and through.  The ultimate art marketplace, Etsy features work by artists of all abilities and quality.  Etsy takes a free market approach to art: you put your artwork on Etsy and either it sells at the price at which you put it up or you have to revise your prices.  There are no price controls on Etsy.

Like eBay, sellers are responsible for their own content on Etsy and buyers have the ability to leave feedback on their experience with sellers from whom they make a purchase.  In order to buy or sell with Etsy, you need to register, but registering is free.  Also like eBay, PayPal is a payment option from most of the sellers on Etsy.  That, however, is where the similarities between Etsy and eBay end.

First, PayPal is not the only payment method on Etsy; you can open a store or make purchases from most of the sellers on Etsy without signing up for a PayPal account.  As such, Etsy makes for a wonderful marketplace alternative for those who want nothing to do with eBay or its affiliated companies.  Second, Etsy is not trying to be everything to everyone.  As a result, Etsy is exclusively devoted to providing a sales channel for artists and fashion designers.  The site is dominated by creators of jewelry, fashion creators who have one-of-a-kind outfits for sale, and sculptors.

Etsy is a great place to find handmade items from independent artists all around the world.  Using Etsy gives you the opportunity to explore an incredible range of artistic works that you could never find under one roof in the real world.  The level of product diversity Etsy represents is one of the truly wonderful aspects of the Internet!
