FireChat Lets People Message Others Even Without Wi-Fi or Cell Signal

People often find themselves in unfortunate circumstances when traveling with their cellphones and ending up with no signal.  When driving long distances or heading to remote locations without wireless network connections, smartphones essentially turn from incredible tools of communication into fancy paperweights. However, there is now a cool product in technology called FireChat that allows users to chat wirelessly on their smartphones without any Internet connection.  FireChat is a smartphone application that uses a proprietary technology called “mesh networking”. Mesh networking lets smartphones communicate with other mobile devices in proximity even when there is no Wi-Fi or mobile signal connection available.  FireChat does not completely replace the need for an Internet connection or allow users to text people from very long distances without a connection.  Still, this smartphone app has many potential applications for consumers who travel.

Currently, FireChat is available for both iOS and Android devices. People can take advantage pf signal-free proximity chat regardless of their smartphone platform.  If anyone has trouble downloading the application from either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, he or she needs to contact iPhone support or Android tech support accordingly.

FireChat works by having users enter or create different group chats based on subject or shared interest.  For example, if a group of friends travels to a remote campsite for an outdoor vacation, they can set up a FireChat room just for them by titling it appropriately for their group.  They can then access that chat room whenever they want and communicate while on the trip.  There are other scenarios where FireChat is a practical solution as well.  For example, groups traveling in separate vehicles over long stretches of road with no cell phone signal can use the app to communicate as long as they keep within a reasonable distance of each other.

The company behind this cool product goes by the name of Open Garden.  This independent company dedicates itself to developing technology that will help avoid and prevent wireless data network congestion in the future.  FireChat’s ability to communicate outside traditional wireless data networks is a side effect of the company’s research.  Open Garden has turned this interesting discovery into a cool product that can help keep people connected even if their phones do not have an Internet connection.
