Now is the Time to Buy Your Own Modem

Buying a modem is rarely something that most people ever consider since their Internet service provider purports to include the rental of a modem they provide as part of the cost of their service.  The modem rental fee is one of the charges included as part of the overall price, typically in the monthly bill most subscribers receive.  The fees charged in a monthly bill include any installation of hardware and service fees for on-site visits by a technician.  There are also charges for returned checks, late payments, or reactivation after you have had service shut off for a late payment or any other reason.  This already costly bill is about to significantly change for customers of the nation’s largest Internet service providers, as both Time Warner Cable and Comcast have raised modem rental fees by 25-33%.

Such a steep increase in price should be enough to convince you to strongly consider purchasing you own modem, though other factors such as extremely short warning may help you to make the decision as well.  Until now, the difficulty and time it would cost a customer to set up their own modem made paying the rental fee seem well worth it to many.  At such rates as $96 and $120 per year, the cost of modem rental likely no longer outweighs the difficulty or cost of purchasing and installing it yourself for most people.

There may be several reasons you rent a modem, the main issues being that you are unaware that buying is an option or because the challenge of installing it is intimidating and you are not tech savvy.  Even so, it is not so difficult as long as you keep in mind which modems are compatible with your Internet service.  With this information in mind, you can focus on price and quality.  If you are the customer of a trustworthy tech support provider, you could even get expert suggestions on what to buy.

Online retailers are an excellent resource for finding the right modem for your needs.  Several trustworthy Internet vendors offer a number of solid overall choices, such as Motorola’s ARRIS SB6121 SURFboard, the Zoom 5363 AC1900 Cable Modem, and the ARRIS Touchstone Cable Modem CM820.  These models are compatible with both TWC and Comcast service and have some of the highest quality ratings of any modem available.  Brand new, any one of them will have paid for itself in about a year and a half or less.  Alternatively, used or refurbished models can be approximately half the cost of a new model and typically last two years or more without the need for repair.

If you are not a technical person, it is no problem to get the computer support you need for the installation of your new modem.  In fact, it often takes nothing more than calling your Internet Service Provider and simply reading them the serial number.  Ultimately, it will be well worth buying your own modem in the long run.
