Theresa Preston-Werner Founded Omakase to Give People Curated Charity Options

It’s probably safe to say that given the chance, most people would donate more to charity.  However, lack of resources, lack of time to do proper research, and general difficulty get in the way very often. Because of this difficulty, people overlook philanthropy in their busy lives.  Cool person in technology Theresa Preston-Werner has founded a new startup that aims to take all the potential hassle out of charitable giving.  Preston-Werner wants to make it so anyone can donate to well-run, effective charitable organizations without having to give it much thought.  Her organization, Omakase, does all the research on charities for its users.  Omakase researches to find the most effective and helpful charities so that donors never have to worry that a poorly run organization will waste the money they give.  Omakase works on a monthly basis, meaning that all donors pledge a certain amount of money to give every month automatically.  Preston-Werner likely believes this model will appeal to those looking for convenience, as it creates a “set it and forget it” mentality once someone pledges.  Users sign up for Omakase’s curated charities through the web.  Anyone who wants to donate but has Internet connection problems should call for home computer support

Omakase offers to give all of its donors a detailed quarterly report.  This report reveals exactly what organizations received the money that users sent to Omakase through the web.  On Omakase’s website, Preston-Werner makes it clear that authenticity and transparency are very important to her.  She backs up that statement by making sure that any donor that wants to know can find out exactly where their money goes.

Preston-Werner’s organization works tech-focused charities in particular. This focus makes it an appealing choice for tech enthusiasts and tech companies who want to make regular donations.  It would make sense for tech-related businesses such as mobile app companies, hardware makers, and IT support organizations to want to support the tech community by donating to tech-based non-profits.

Preston-Werner earned her PhD in Cultural Anthropology before founding Omakase.  While most of her past experience is in academia, the skills necessary to succeed there—research skills, determination, intelligence—all translate rather well to Preston-Werner’s current job as executive director of Omakase.  This cool person in technology has some background in charity as well.  She previously acted as the director of evaluations for Women Work Together, an organization that helps fund the education of underprivileged adolescent girls.  Preston-Werner is certainly well prepared as she tries to change the nature of charitable giving for many people with Omakase.
