The Coolest Assistant Professor In The World: Louis Phee!

There are some truly incredible minds working in academia today.  The best teachers can inspire the next generation and help change the world by providing the fundamentals of their given field to their successors.  But only the most jaded people actually believe the unfortunate adage “those who can’t, teach.”  In fact, some of the very best educators lead by example and continue their professional development by excelling in their field while teaching.  Louis McPhee is one such educator and his latest invention, a medical robot, may well change the world.

An assistant professor at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, Louis Phee is able to translate simple ideas into complex, working technologies.  Louis Phee is credited with the design of a new medical robot based upon a crab!  When Lawrence Ho mentioned to Phee that cancer extraction would be much easier using a crab, over a crab dinner, Phee explored the possibility of taking that outlandish idea and making it into a reality.  Louis Phee and Lawrence Ho worked together to create a surgical robot designed like a crab that is now treating cancer in the esophagus!

Phee’s invention with Ho is a surprisingly sophisticated one for such a simple concept.  The robot has two pincers and it is deployed down the throat of a patient while a doctor operates the robot by remote.  Phee’s robot based upon a crab uses one pincer to extract a cancerous tumor within the esophagus.  The other claw stops the blood flow and cauterizes place from which it removed the tumor.  The robot had to be sophisticated enough to bring the intact tumor back up the esophagus in order to be biopsied by a doctor.  Fortunately, Phee and Ho’s robot does just that!

It is almost unsurprising that Louis Phee would be able to design such a neat and useful robot.  Since 1992, Phee has been diligently working on electronic devices and he has a real passion for robotics.  At Nanyang Technological University, Louis Phee earned both his Bachelor’s of Engineering and his Master’s of Engineering in Mechanical and Production Engineering.  Phee went abroad to complete his doctorate work.  In 2002, Louis Phee earned his Ph.D. in Biomedical Robotics Engineering from the prestigious Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Italy.

Just as he followed his education in a single-minded fashion, Louis Phee developed professionally in a way that made his success almost inevitable.  After working as a process engineer for Hewlett-Packard, Phee advanced to research positions that translated his academic studies into working electronic devices in Korea, Italy and then Singapore!  With such a steady growth of productive ideas turned into incredible machines, it is hard to imagine what Louis Phee will come up with next.
