Power Felt Is An Intriguing Emerging Techology!

Environmental awareness has become an important factor in all areas of society.  There has been a great deal of research into developing environmentally beneficial or responsible technologies. Researchers at Wake Forest University in South Carolina are concerned with creating green technologies. That is one reason why they have been developing a new method of harnessing heat energy to convert into electricity. Power Felt is the first breakthrough that the researchers have developed to create cleaner, greener, and more sustainable energy.

The Power Felt cloth has carbon nanotubes woven so that they form a fabric. These nanotubes have a special structure that allows them to absorb the energy from excess heat. Some everyday products, like baseball hats and golf clubs, already contain small amounts of carbon nanotubes. The researchers, however, have made Power Felt completely from carbon nanotubes inside plastic fibers. That means it works much more efficiently than the products with only a few carbon nanotubes in them.

This kind of heat gathering nanotechnology has been around for a while. Power Felt is the first product that has the potential to be sold commercially because Wake Forest University is using carbon nanotubes, rather than the more expensive materials other researchers use. So far, the most successful application of power Felt has come from wireless charging research. By fitting a Power Felt smartphone cover with a wireless power transmitter, a smartphone may receive its charge from the Power Felt case and never need an adapter again.  The Wake Forest researchers have said that their short-term goal is to be able to produce Power Felt cheaply enough that a Power Felt smartphone cover only costs one extra dollar more than non-Power Felt covers.

In the long term, the Wake Forest researchers see their product as having potential applications in many different areas. These areas could include gathering heat under roof tiles, in car parts to keep them cool, and as clothing that could charge a smartphone or music player. Each of these products would provide challenges to interfacing with the Power Felt. With Power Felt as the common medium, developing an initial interface may open more avenues to further applications of the carbon nanotube product.

This innovation is precisely the kind that changes the world in notable, beneficial ways. As Wake Forest University researchers work on perfecting and amplifying Power Felt’s abilities, they are tapping into a reliable source of ever-renewing energy – the heat we naturally give off.  By using body heat and Power Felt, consumers will not plug their electronic devices into walls that draw upon power sources that may not be the most environmentally responsible.  With Power Felt, the researchers at Wake Forest University see a day in the not-too-distant future when you might recharge your small mobile electronic products through your hoodie or other clothing!
