A Hot Commodity For Social Media, Paul Adams Rules!

Internet social networks are still a relatively new phenomenon and as a result, programmers, businesspeople and the public do not yet fully understand the nature and impact of them.  For sure, Myspace, Facebook, and Google+ have all grown and attracted people to them, but there are few people who understand why.  To unravel this great mystery of why people use Internet social networks and how to retain users, there is Paul Adams.

Paul Adams is fascinated by sociology and studied social media on the Internet as it developed.  Adams holds a Bachelor’s degree in Design in Industrial Design and he earned his M.S. in Interactive Media.  Armed with those credentials, he initially entered the workforce as an industrial designer.  As a free agent, Paul Adams designed car interiors for Faurecia and he designed the vacuum that became Dyson’s best-selling vacuum in Japan!

Developing an interest in how design affects social media, Paul Adams went to work at Flow as a user experience consultant.  In that position, Adams quickly learned how the image of companies like Vodafone, the BBC and The Guardian affected the experience consumers had with their products.  His work for Flow brought him to the attention of Google.  Working for Google, Paul Adams designed the concept of Social Circles for Internet social networks.  The innovation of Circles is the key selling point of Google+.

While working for Google, Paul Adams wrote his new book, Social CirclesSocial Circles is all about how Internet social networks create relationships and how those relationships transfer to the real world.  Applying his philosophies and his innate curiosity into issues of desire and ownership, Adams took his talents to Facebook.  At Facebook, Paul Adams works as a Product Manager.  Adams started at Facebook as a researcher investigating the links between branding and viral advertising.  Deeply curious about the way brand names affect purchases and how Internet advertising campaigns affect perception, Adams pioneered research on how groups of friends share advertising information.  Working for Facebook as a Product Manager, Paul Adams is translating his theoretical understanding of social relations and advertising into more efficient advertising campaigns for business using the Facebook platform.

Deep at work on his next book, Grouped, Paul Adams is discovering personal fulfillment at Facebook that he did not experience at Google.  It will be interesting to see if the new work Adams is doing for Facebook can keep Facebook successful as it goes head to head with the last big innovation that Paul Adams had!
