UrbanSitter Connects Babysitters with Employers Based on Niche Skills

Before the Internet, people’s only real option for finding a respectable quality babysitter or nanny was most often simple word-of-mouth.  Times have certainly changed, as babysitters and nannies often advertise their services on sites like Craigslist.  However, the results from these general posting sites come out mixed at best.  Families are just as likely to get an awful sitter as a great one.  However, cool product UrbanSitter may be able to change the situation for families that seek babysitting help on the Internet.

UrbanSitter is database of available babysitters and nannies, but it doesn’t act as a basic directory.  UrbanSitter uses several distinct strategies to ensure the best possible sitter and family connections happen.  Rather than having potential babysitters simply post a vague or unhelpful advertisement, UrbanSitter asks sitters about their specific skillset and experiences.  The startup digs deep when it questions nannies who sign up to look for work on the site.  Foreign languages, background, and unique skills like CPR and first aid are special skillsets that UrbanSitter inquires about to the workers who post on the site.  Families can then search for babysitters based on skillset.  If parents need a caretaker who speaks Spanish and has good computer skills because their child is just learning English and the last nanny broke their technology, forcing them to get computer repair, those parents can easily search for those skills with this cool product.

UrbanSitter also uses several unique features to help parents determine a babysitter’s quality before hiring.  The site uses a recommendation system based on a users’ circle of friends.  When someone sets up their entire social group on the site, they can all share babysitters and recommend different people for different jobs based on each user’s experience.  Users who have problems setting up a network of friends on the site should get help from computer support specialists.

UrbanSitter also tracks several metrics for each babysitter that they list on the site.  For example, when someone is browsing a particular babysitter’s profile, that person can see how quickly a sitter responds on average to a request, how many families have asked the nanny back more than once, and how many friends they have that are also babysitters.  Users can look at these stats when deciding what babysitter is best for them.

UrbanSitter is hoping the level of convenience that all these different features provide will be enough to drive both more babysitters and customers to the site as the startups pushes onward.
