A New Twist Backwards – Julie Uhrman

Are you one of those people who is gets frustrated when you go out to a restaurant and watch people at the surrounding tables diligently bent over their smartphone, communicating with anybody and everybody except the people across the table from them?  Julie Uhrman had similar frustration with gamers huddled alone over a smartphone instead of sprawled out together in front of a large monitor screen.  Julie remembers the good ole days when she and her sister came together to play video games around a TV set.

That’s what Julie says inspired her to create a new form of gaming console, the Ouya.  While Julie admits that the Ouya will never compete with “the big three” console makers, she touts the Rubik’s Cube-sized box’s niche appeal. First, there’s the price.  At $99, Ouya costs less than half the cost of the big three systems.  Next, the gaming console runs a version of the Android operating system. All games available for Ouya must be free or available on a free trial basis, certainly distinguishing Ouya games from the rest of the pack.  For would-be hackers of the console, Uhrman says, “Go for it!”

Hackers are only one of the many threats to online-connected devices.  Internet security is among the many unlimited services now available for the various devices on the market.  Game enthusiasts can take advantage of expert help with home network issues used to play games from anywhere in the house.

Uhrman experienced enormous success securing the funding to turn her idea into a reality.  She earned the sought-after total of $950,000 within eight hours on Kickstarter, the crowdfunding site.  Another $8 million rolled in over the next month. The project became Kickstart’s second-highest earning project in its history.

Uhrman’s enthusiasm may well be the success factor.  Undaunted by the early online buzz that has been mixed at best, Uhrman claims the console is doing “great.”

The game industry veteran has formerly been on the executive staff at IGN, GameFly and Vivendi Universal, among others in her business profile.  She describes herself on her LinkedIn profile as “Love finding talent.  I believe anything is possible.”

Julie takes customer feedback seriously, as shown by improvements made to the pre-release version of the unit. Still, Julie Uhrman refuses to allow anyone to pigeonhole her or her console.  Ouya makes available fun, creative games that would never find a place on traditional consoles.  Julie Uhrman is bringing the fun back to TV gaming.
