Catherine A. Lesjak Is A Powerhouse At HP!

When Meg Whitman was elected by Hewlett-Packard’s Board of Directors to be the new CEO of HP, the story was all about Meg Whitman, not about how a woman was taking the reins of a powerful technology company. The media became uncharacteristically gender-blind with Meg Whitman and that is promising for the future of business and women in the tech sector. It is also not a surprise in that Hewlett-Packard had been managed by a woman before. That woman was Catherine A. Lesjak.

Catherine A. Lesjak serves as the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Hewlett-Packard, but that is not the highest position she has held for the company! For a brief period before Leo Apotheker was named CEO, Lesjak served as interim CEO. Not merely a placeholder, Catherine A. Lesjak used her time at the head of HP to buy both 3PAR and ArcSight, Inc. away from rival companies. Following the Board’s decision to put Apotheker in the CEO spot, Lesjak returned to her duties as Chief Financial Officer.

The road to Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of HP was a long one for Catharine A. Lesjak. Lesjak began her professional life with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology from Stanford University. Her life took a turn when she began pursuing her Master’s degree at the University of California at Berkeley. There, she shifted her interests from science to business and she received her Master’s of Business in Finance. That degree got her in the door at Hewlett-Packard.

Since coming to work for Hewlett-Packard twenty-four years ago, Catherine A. Lesjak has experienced almost every level of the business side of HP. Lesjak started her career at HP working in the Commercial Customer Organization where she was a controller and credit manager. She worked her way through the Software Global Business Unit, Enterprise Marketing and Solutions Unit, and up to the company’s treasury department. Before her promotion to Executive Vice President and CFO, Catherine A. Lesjak worked as a Senior Vice President and Treasurer for Hewlett-Packard.

Since ascending to the top and returning to the position of Chief Financial Officer, Catherine A. Lesjak is delightfully candid on the state of HP. Vocal about how Hewlett-Packard is performing on its own and within the crowded tech sector, Lesjak remains very supportive of HP, but is also realistic about the challenges the company faces. While many people in big business are characterized as very conservative, Lesjak defies the expectations by applauding HP’s willingness to abruptly change direction. With Catherine A. Lesjak’s experience at Hewlett-Packard and Meg Whitman’s fresh new perspective and energy, HP is bound to recover from its slump!
