What is RAM?

photo RAMWhen going out to purchase a new computer, one of the specs that people often discuss is the amount of RAM, or random access memory, that a computer has.  However, most people do not truly understand the purpose RAM serves in their computers.  With this article, RESCUECOM intends to give people a stronger understanding of RAM so they can make informed purchasing decisions regarding it in the future.

RAM, also commonly referred to simply as “computer memory”, is one of the most important aspects in determining the speed of a computer system. Computers need to be able access information quickly when performing numerous tasks at once and a lot of that information is not stored on a computer’s hard drive.  Therefore, computers store information temporarily using RAM. Computers use RAM to have immediate access to information when processing different tasks. This system lets computers work more quickly and prevents them from needing to access the hard drive so often that it causes slowdown and delays. The more RAM a computer has, the less it has to slow down to access the hard drive.  However, RAM does not store information long-term like a hard drive does.  Computers constantly overwrite the information on their RAM as their tasks change during use.

Different operating systems require different amounts of RAM.  For example, the minimum RAM required for Windows 7 and Windows 8 to work properly is 2 GB (gigabytes) for most computers.  For Mac OS X Mavericks, the minimum requirement is also 2GB of RAM.  Therefore, if someone want to use one of the newest operating systems on his or her computer, he or she must ensure that that computer has at least 2GB of RAM, or it will not function.  Much like operating systems, specific pieces of software also have special requirements for RAM.  Commonly used programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, iTunes and most video games have minimum specifications for RAM that are separate from an operating system’s requirement.  Before purchasing a computer, people must make sure they know how much RAM is necessary for the software that they intend to use.  Those who have trouble finding this information through their own research can always speak to a tech support company about how much RAM they may or may not need.

People who only perform basic tasks with their computers, such as browsing the Internet, checking email, watching videos and listening to music, likely do not need an excessive amount of RAM.  Getting more than the absolute minimum is a good idea in order to make sure computers don’t slow down, but there is no need to purchase a computer with an excessive amount.  However, if people edit videos and photos or play graphically intensive video games, more RAM will often be necessary to maintain smooth performance.  People who perform intense multi-tasking while using the computer should also ensure they have a significant amount of RAM to support their activities.  It is possible to add RAM to a computer if someone feels that he or she needs more.  However, those who are inexperienced with installing computer parts will want to have a computer repair professional add RAM to their computers rather than perform the operation themselves.

When purchasing a new computer or considering an upgrade, it is helpful to know the amount of RAM that will properly support your activities.  Ensure that you are aware of the amount of RAM that suits your needs the next time you need to make a purchasing decision regarding your computer technology.
