SmartMat Brings Yoga Instruction to Your Home

The yoga industry has experienced explosive growth rates over the past several years. The growing popularity has greatly increased the demand for yoga accessories, tools, and apparel. You can find yoga classes, yoga clothing, and other merchandise available in almost any city in the U.S., and it has become a lucrative industry for a variety of companies. People are always looking for new and useful ways to improve their yoga experience, often seeking methods to allow for better practice at home. Technology has adapted for this exact purpose in a variety of areas. Online classes and videos are available from a multitude of places, apps to measure breathing, and fitness tracking programs are just some of the numerous ways people use tech to augment their yoga workout. SmartMat adds to these tools with a tech-infused yoga mat, and claims to be the first tool of its kind.

The portable yoga mat has integrated technology to monitor a user’s positioning and technique. SmartMat then goes on to help improve that technique as users move closer to the ideal position. It works by using sensors to detect pressure and weight distribution on the mat. SmartMat uses this in conjunction with information on your particular body type to determine the correct position a user should be in. The mat then communicates with an app on a mobile device, which uses audio and visual cues to direct users on how they should adjust. SmartMat currently features mobile tech support for most tablets and smartphones, letting you use the app on what you currently have.

The concept for SmartMat came about in order to make yoga practices more feasible for a busy lifestyle. The SmartMat team found that there is often not enough time to meet the various appointments people often commit themselves to keeping. Many activities, namely yoga practice in this case, are often pushed aside to make room for more pressing concerns as a result. SmartMat aims to make practicing yoga more convenient and accessible for anyone, especially if users are timid about attending classes where they have less experience than others.

While SmartMat aims to make practicing yoga at home much more effective and offers a potential alternative to expensive classes, it will not eliminate the need for instructed settings entirely. In fact, the team’s plans for the future include an instructor version of their product. The instructor’s version would let those teaching a class see input from their student’s devices, even over the Internet. This could allow effective practices from the comfort of your own home, even when you want to utilize formal classes. Just make sure to have home network support available so you never need to worry about disconnecting from a class.
