Nara Uses Artificial Intelligence to Help You Find Better Food

It’s a common experience: you turn on your computer, go to Google, Bing or whatever search engine you prefer and you search for local restaurants.  You end up with countless choices to sift through and an immense amount of research to do before even leaving the house.  Tom Copeman, CEO and founder of Nara, is trying to eliminate this problem with his artificial intelligence based restaurant recommendation service.

The most common model for websites and apps that review and recommend restaurants is usually review-based.  There are common listings and individual customers can rate their experiences.  However, this leads to inconsistent data and often times, you’ll enjoy a restaurant that someone else will hate, making their review a hindrance more than a help. According to Copeman, Nara handles recommendations differently. Copeman informed Rescuecom that Nara uses artificial intelligence to mine the Internet for information and make more personalized recommendations for you based on its analysis of your preferences and larger trends.

Copeman told Rescuecom that Nara analyzes the web to fill its database with restaurant listings.  Users can then browse restaurants and give ones Nara recommends them a thumbs up or thumbs down.  Nara’s engine then uses this user-data along with other data collected from the Internet at large to make further recommendations.  This is similar to the way that many online media companies, such as Netflix and Pandora, make recommendations on their own sites.  Copeman told Rescuecom that he was trying to provide a similar experience for real-world situations, starting with the restaurant experience.  However, Copeman also claimed that Nara does not simply use the Netflix model based on “what other people like” to make its recommendations to you.  Copeman said that Nara’s recommendation engine uses a more analytical approach and takes many more factors into account.  We will find out if this supposedly deeper approach translates to better customer satisfaction and uptake in time. Nara users who find themselves having difficulty with the website should call for computer support.

Copeman told Rescuecom that his inspiration for trying to bring a recommendation engine to events and services in real-world spaces was that he felt he spent “too much time searching and not living.”  He is trying to solve that problem with Nara, hoping it will reduce the amount of time people have to search for restaurants they will enjoy.  If Nara’s restaurant recommendation service is successful, Copeman says he will expand his business into other consumer spaces as well.

Nara is available on the web and on both the Google Play and Apple App stores.  Find mobile support if you have trouble with either the Android or iPhone app.
