MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis Wants to Make 3D Printing Accessible to You

Bre Pettis’s company MakerBot is a manufacturer of 3D printers.  3D Printers use three-dimensional product designs developed via computer software programs to “print” out an object made from plastic material.  Most 3D printer manufacturers cater to the industrial market and their products often cost tens of thousands of dollars.  However, Pettis wants MakerBot to buck that trend.  Founded in 2009, MakerBot focuses on developing and selling more affordable 3D Printers that hook up to regular desktop computers.  Pettis is working to make 3D printing a reality in an everyday home setting.  If Pettis fully realizes his dream, it is possible that people will someday be able to design physical objects and print them right at home using their computer.  In theory, this could affect heavily affect the larger manufacturing industry.

MakerBot’s most recently released 3D printer costs less than $3,000.  While that may still seem like a lot to most everyday computer users, it is significantly less than the industrial models that dominate the industry today. At that price point, Pettis may not have reached his goal to make 3D printing available to everyone yet.  Still, he and his company have opened up the market considerably and made it possible for many more people to discover 3D printing.  There was once a time when most laptops and laptop repair seemed impossible for most families to afford too.  In time, Pettis may yet reach his goal of making the 3D printer a common household item if technological history can repeat itself. If you own or purchase a MakerBot 3D printer and have trouble setting it up, computer support is probably the best option for you.

Bre Pettis isn’t just a stationary executive who sits behind a desk all day.  He actively engages with his customers by regularly making do-it-yourself Youtube videos about 3D printing.  He also speaks regularly at events and conferences all over the country.  Pettis’s propensity for speaking and engaging with people likely comes from his background as a public school art teacher, a profession that he says he is proud have been part of in his blog.  He is definitely a cool person who does all he can to engage with people and do more in his position than sit in an office.
