What Does It Take To Be A Software Engineer At Dropbox? Be Like Tina Wen!

Even as the recession in the United States persists, there are still some fields that are still employing highly-educated individuals.  In the tech sector, one of the most coveted and competitive positions for new graduates is the position of software engineer.  The online data storage company, Dropbox, continues to hire software engineers.  Just what are they looking for?  You have to be as smart, versatile and fun as Tina Wen!

Tina Wen is a software engineer at Dropbox and a recent graduate of MIT.  With her B.S. and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Microsoft quickly hired Tina Wen.  Intrigued by her thesis on bandwidth-sensitive oblivious routing, Microsoft put Wen on the team that developed Microsoft Outlook for Mac.  If you have Microsoft’s Office for Mac 2011 edition, you have some of Wen’s software!  Working as a software developer engineer was a nice step up for Wen at Microsoft; she had a summer internship there working on script tests for Microsoft TV the summer before she finished her Master’s.

Wen came to the United States when she was eighteen.  Raised in China, Tina Wen experienced quite a bit of culture shock when she started her professional career at a local McDonald’s.  Attending MIT, Wen discovered she had a real passion for electrical engineering and soon she was fascinated by software development.  She has a love of travel and after serving as an exchange student between MIT and Cambridge, she realized just how happy she was to call the United States home.

Despite enjoying her position at Microsoft, Tina Wen jumped at the opportunity to work for Dropbox.  At Dropbox, Wen is developing software for the iOS platform. Soon, the Dropbox app specifically formatted to work on Apple’s iPad, iPod Touch and iPhones will have more functions because of Wen’s software engineering talents.  While she praises Dropbox for its collaborative work environment, Wen is given specific tasks to program and many changes to the Dropbox app are the result of her hard work.  This is quite impressive when you consider that Wen had not worked in the iOS environment before she came to Dropbox, almost four months ago!

With versatility, intelligence and a strong work ethic, Tina Wen continues to wow the Dropbox team.  If you have those skills, and a head for coding, perhaps you might be a great software engineer, too!
